Corfu

Old Fortress

The Old Fortress is the most imposing monument of Corfu built on a rocky peninsula with two characteristic hills, separated from the city of Corfu by an artificial moat for protection called “Contrafossa”.

The history of the Old Fortress begins in the 6th century A.D., when the ancient city of Corfu on the Kanoni Peninsula was destroyed by barbaric raids. The fortress became the city of Corfu until the 15th century.

The current form of its fortifications is due to the defensive works done by the Venetians to secure the occupation of Corfu, due to its strategic and commercial importance.

Today in the fortress you will find the historical archive of Corfu, a collection of sculptures and icons from the Byzantine era as well as the public library.
